Commute Smart    Travel Green

The City of Spokane is encouraging drive-alone commuters who work in Spokane’s Downtown and University Districts to explore other commute options. To support commuter’s efforts to make a change in their routine, the City’s Planning Services Department is implementing Commute Smart – Travel Green, a 10-month transportation program that thanks drive-alone commuters for trying a commute alternative for the first time.

A key component of the Commute Smart – Travel Green program is the creation and implementation of a Transportation Demand Management (TDM) plan. The goal of Transportation Demand Management is to decrease demand on an existing transportation system, rather than increasing its capacity through capital improvements. Spokane’s Planning Services Department aims to do this by reducing drive-alone commuting for home-to-work and home-to-school trips.

Commute Smart – Travel Green will use education, assistance and incentives to encourage drive-alone commuters to try riding the bus, forming a carpool, joining a vanpool, riding their bike or walking to work or school. Incentives range from $5 coffee cards to $500 cash cards.

Those overseeing the program are quick to point out that incentives are not the only benefit that commuters will realize. Commuters will save money on gas and parking; extend the life of their vehicle; and reduce their stress level. They also will be supporting the objectives of Spokane’s Sustainability Initiative through resource conservation and a reduction in air and water pollution.

We think you will find that the experience is better than the expectation!

Whether you ride the bus, carpool, vanpool or choose a healthier option like bicycling or walking, you will find the change is not only easy, fun and rewarding, it can also:

Save you money on gas and parking

Extend the life of your car

     Reduce your stress level

     Lessen traffic congestion

Reduce air and water pollution, and

     EARN YOU some great prizes

The Commute Smart – Travel Green Program thanks drive-alone commuters

who try using a commute alternative for the first time:

If you are one of the first 700 new users to try a commute alternative 10 times a month for 3 consecutive months, you will win a $50 gift card.

If you are one of the first 250 people to refer a new user and that user tries a commute alternative 5 times within one month, you will win a $5 coffee card.

There will be 3 chances for new and existing users to win a $500 VISA cash card as well!
